What we do with chimneys and why

When folks call us they usually have specific requests. A chimney cleaning (sweep), a water leak, a critter in their chimney, power vent removal, smoke issues or want an inspection, we will address each issue individually here.

A chimney sweep should be done when necessary. A chimney inspection should be done once a year. If we have never seen your chimney before, we will do an inspection before we sweep it. If your chimney has been neglected, we will sweep your chimney for inspection purposes.

Water leaks are deceiving. We all know that water seeks the path of least resistance. The real question is why do you have a water leak? Most people assume their flashing is leaking and thats all they want repaired. This is not true in most cases. Most times it is the chimney that is allowing water to leaking right through the masonry. If you have a water leak, we will start by performing a chimney inspection. It is imperative in order to ascertain the best method of trying to stop a water leak. You can fix your flashing and roof til the cows come home, but you may still have a leak and undetected damage in your chimney. And please, do not use petroleum based, combustible tar to flash a chimney.

So you want an inspection? Excellent. You should have one every year. You should also have an inspection on the house you are thinking of buying. It is best to know if your prospective home needs chimney repairs before you buy it, not after. Shortly after we visit with you, you will receive a chimney report. This report will detail our findings with photographic documentation and include an estimate if any repairs are needed.

Problem Chimenys

You should know that your oil company does not sweep your furnace flue when they service your furnace. You should also be aware that if you use Propane or Natural Gas, you should have your appliances inspected annually and a pressure test performed by your gas supplier.

Our Certifications

If you have a creature in your chimney just relax, close the damper in your fireplace and give us a call. You will not get hurt or sick from whomever has crept into your chimney, unless you get up close and friendly with them or their excrement. If the critter has entered your home, just open doors and windows and leave them alone. Be advised, there is a bird called the Chimney Swift that is a protected species. They cannot be removed from your chimney by Federal Law. They establish their nests in early spring and will usually vacate your chimney before the heating season. As a protected species, you may wish to allow them to nest. A swept chimney is favorable to Swifts because their nests will adhere better and not slide. Be sure to have your chimney inspected after they leave so we can remove their nests.

Attaboys!

Power vents are used for situations where the chimney cannot achieve an adequate draft on their own. This is not an ideal solution to a draft problem. Most power vents fail after a few years. In most instances, we will install a new venting system, sometimes a stainless steel Class A system. You will need to contact your furnace company to disconnect the power vent before we arrive and retune your furnace after your new chimney is installed.

Faqs

Smoke issues are caused by many factors. Poor draft, house pressurization, incorrectly constructed chimney or fireplace, improper burning techniques or improper fuel just to name a few. We will inspect your chimney and appliances to determine the best approach to correcting these issues. Remember, your smoke at the chimney should be white or clear, not black. If you see black smoke, that is your expensive, unburned fuel going up the chimney and corrections need to be made. Watch this four minute Tutorial to understand why this is true!
